Interesting, but I somehow doubt they'll go through as it doesn't follow their environmental agenda too much. It could look good if instead of going with a high gloss finish they would use a sandblasted finish where you wouldn't see the weaving and would be harder to scratch.

    How are things food wise?

Within the Moscone Center, pretty terrible -- expensive and not good. A much better bet is to walk over to the Metreon Center, which is very close by. The food court has some good selections. I'm a big fan of the Long Life Noodle Company.

Let's see, I have a few dozen things I'd like to see:

    - (S)FTP-mountable volumes that you can WRITE to.
    - Faster spotlight. I really wouldn't mind, but they got me believing it'd be "instant", and really it's just "fast" right now.
    - A "calculate folder sizes" in the finder that acutally applies to all windows.
    - A few more display options for files in finder. That "Group By People" one in Spotlight is kinda clever. A large tile mode would be good.
    - Folders in the Finder that hint about what's inside. LIke a folder full o' word docs would have a word doc icon imposed on the folder.
    - A whole new Label system that is A) Not ugly and B) color customizable
    - A new dock, or at least a new dock feature! Or, at least avoiding the situation where an item dragged to the trash accidently gets a permanent home on the dock instead. The dock is, like, 10.1 technology
    - resolution independence, of course. I want to zoom out a bit.
    - an optional grey, translucent layer below the current app that makes all background windows a bit more in the background. I get confused if I can't see the traffic lights.

Verizon does, in a way. I've met one of there guys.

They have 50 cell phones in a car connected to a computer that continually makes calls, checks quality, hangs up and does it again. They also have phones of competing carriers hooked up to make comparisions with the competition.

They have lots of these cars and drive all over the place collecting data to ensure that there coverage is indeed better than the competition. Like I said, I met one of these guys and saw the car first hand.

They have about a hundred of these test cars and trucks across the country, if I recall the business articles about them correctly.

And because their tests include competing networks, Verizon probably has one of the most accurate coverage maps for everyone.

As far as the iPhone app goes, I think it's a great idea for carriers without test vehicles and/or to see where the most desire for extra coverage is.

Edit: Here's a 2005 article (http://www.mobiletracker.net/archives/2005/04/04/verizon-wireless-hear-me-now)about a test car setup, with pictures of the car and test rigs at the bottom.

about 9.7GB was my pre-load and then later a 300MB file was downloaded. So expect about 10GB of download.

Damn. Well, I guess I'll wait a bit. Thanks!

Sounds like you should try another OS, maybe Wndows.

I'm pretty happy with 10.6, and I'm glad Apple trimmed it down instead of bloating it up. But I would like a different launcher than the current Dock. I have lots if programs I regularly use. I use folders in the Dock, but that's no better than Wndows' drop-down menus. Maybe it would be more efficient to have a trigger like the one for Dashboard -- hit a function key and your most-used apps glide in for selection.

    Funny, I thought the same!

The way to go, IMHO, is buying a DVD (on Amazon) with an optional iPod download for a dollar extra. Mostly cheaper then $10 and we have it both.

One of the things I'm most curious about Apple making movies available for download is where the download fits into the consumption model, i.e., whether video downloads will be another release window or part of a current release window.

The studios want to capture income off the same properties as many times as possible, but the trend has been toward shorter and shorter release windows to maximize on marketing dollars. (Wal-Mart went ape-crap when one of the studios tried to time DVD release to cable and satellite PPV.)

I would like to see Apple position iPod movies as part of the a broader strategy for higher-resolution content, but I don't see them going for a model where you download the iPod version and get the DVD in the mail. Not when the model is changing away from DVD purchase/rental and toward a PPV model.

Until Apple can figure out a way to provide HD quality with a reasonable download time -- ahem, Mac mini media center -- I think movies will be available only in the quality that TV shows are currently available.

Price is now confirmed at $150 for Kinect + Kinect Adventures. Also confirmed is a new 4GB Arcade 360, based on the slim design, retailing in a bundle with Kinect for $299 (or $199 for the 360 by itself), giving a $50 discount on the total cost.

My thoughts? Too expensive to bother with! Kinect costs nearly as much as a console itself, which is far more complex.

[EDIT: 129 in the UK, bundle price at 249]

That is false information. The X1900 is over 25% faster in every category.

Oh right. I forgot that the x1900 existed for the G5 as well. It is indeed quite a bit faster.

The original dispute you had with my statement was that W-CDMA did not leverage CDMA and GSM technologies. The quote from Wikipedia clearly states that W-CDMA does leverage the CDMA signalling method.

The original dispute I had with your statement was your assertion "W-CDMA is a mixture of CDMA and, to a lesser extent, GSM technologies."

This is false. There's no GSM in W-CDMA. It isn't a mixture of anything. I also made the point to explicitly point out that W-CDMA is a CDMA air interface technology, but not derived from IS-95. This was to clear up a common misconception and wasn't directed specifically at you.

However, whatever the case, there's no GSM in W-CDMA. There's GSM in UMTS, which uses W-CDMA, but none in W-CDMA. The parts of GSM that "do the same work" as W-CDMA does couldn't be less related.

As for the presentation from the IEEE, it jives with other literature I've read in my IEEE publications that I subscribe to and the IEEE is a very credible source in my book.

I'm sure it is, but it's nonetheless wrong if it implies what you suggested. The one thing I will point out though is that the alphabet soup in mobile phone standards leads common confusions of terms that have gone into this part of the industry too.

Just as "CDMA" is commonly used to mean "the IS-95 (or Qualcomm) implementation of CDMA", W-CDMA is frequently used to mean UMTS.

Nonetheless, that usage is wrong, and it's extremely easy to prove it's wrong. FOMA is not UMTS based (it has some things in common, namely the air interface standard and it's compatible with the same USIM cards, but the high level protocols themselves are completely different.) FOMA was the first W-CDMA system.

I promise you, W-CDMA is only the lowest layer of the UMTS system. It doesn't have any GSM in it, that's in the rest of UMTS.

There are a lot of nutjobs who read this forum. And I mean a LOT.

People whose grasp of reality is so tenuous as to ignore the economics of consumer electronics manufacturing and the realities of Newtonian physics. It's quite sad, really.

The people who believed this rumor are the same people who would watch 3 expected Verizon iphone rumors come and go over a year's time and on reading the next one declare they "can't wait to get it" like it was fact and the previous false rumors had never happened. They never hear about the boy who cried wolf I guess. It explains how people can listen to a religious leader declare the end is coming on a particular date, watch the date come and go and continue following that leader as though nothing happened.

The more I hear about Leopard (or even DON'T hear), the more excited I get to watch every last little bit of Vistas thunder stolen by it. You absolutely know Mr. Jobs is keenly aware of the opportunity to make M$ look like a bunch of schmucks here.

It's like that 4-foot-tall bully kid in 8th grade who winds up getting the tar beat out of him as soon as he hits High School.

    :D

You do realise that Vista's thunder is only being stolen amongst the Mac users. Don't kid yourself, the release of Vista is going to be the biggest thing in software releases in the world's media this year. Leopard is small change compared to the massive amounts of press that MS are going to drum up for Vista.

My list of releases in terms of press coverage:

    1. Vista
    2. Office 2007
    3. Adobe Creative Suite 3
    4. Mac OSX 10.5 Leopard

Don't get me wrong, I'm a great Mac fan but you just can't seriously think that the next release of OSX is going to steal any press thunder from the long-awaited new version of Windows. The press will eat up anything MS feeds it, they'll hail all the features we've had for years that have finally made it into Vista as the most innovative and fresh ideas and this is why Apple won't be releasing until at least March.

Come March, any press stories about Vista troubles will be at their peak after new adopters have had it on their systems for a month and any bugs will be showing themselves. It's then that Apple need to get OSX into the mind of the public.

Now now, calling Budweiser a beer is a stretch as it is and calling it a lager is an insult to any properly brewed lager out there. Like someone else in this thread stated before it's a cheap diluted ricewine with hops added for something pretending to be taste. As for Chimay, never had it but if it is in the same range of products as that .... stuff.... from Anheusser operates in, it probably isn't a belgium ale either.....
    Cheers,

    Ahmed

Oh I agree... I merely saying it for the sake of saying it since it was being discussed that is all. Couldn't agree more!

Jon Stewart is an unimaginable idiot. He strikes me as fairly bright person, who like all TV talking heads, is intentionally stupid on TV, which is why I cannot watch.

His opening comments forced me to shut it off before even getting to the part about Apple....if he doesn't know by now that Obama is aiding in dismantling the Constitution, just like Bush did, just like Clinton did, just like Bush before that, then you're either an idiot, or intentionally trying to deceive and divert people, and for both reasons I cannot watch Jon Stewart.

If Apple always intended to release the new 6G/widescreen iPod at the same time as the Zune, why did they bring out the 5.5G so recently?
The iTunes 5->6 transition and iPod mini->nano transitions should demonstrate that just because something is new and/or successful it doesn't mean that it won't be replaced suddenly by Apple on a whim. :p

The larger and more popular Apple becomes as a company, the harder it will become for them to keep such a tight lid on what we're not supposed to see. From the first iPhone to the last, look at their ability to keep their unreleased projects away from the tech blogs. It will only get worst.

I had a laptop with a magnesium alloy case back in the days before I became a Mac Convert. It was a Sony VAIO 505-TR, and was a very nice light machine. One of the benefits of the magnesium case over the aluminium Powerbook case is the magnesium case never corroded like my 12" PB case has.
