I didn't hear about the attacks until I was driving to class. I thought it was a prank call (that station plays prank calls in the AM) and when I got to campus I bumped into an ex friend of mine-- she was laughing!  What a jerk, she said, "OMG like, these planes totally flew into the WTC buildings! HAH! Sucks to be stuck in there."
Every single teacher I had let the classes watch the news on TV (in Spanish class we watched the Spanish-language version of the news). Honestly, the severity of the attacks didn't hit me until one student in my class started sobbing hysterically when another bozo student said, "I'm so sick of watching this on tv, can't we do something else?"
It turned out that the student who was upset, her father worked right next to the WTC buildings and none of her extended family had gotten in contact w/ him yet. :(

I too will be very disappointed if the scroll wheel disappears from the iPod.
I am also quite skeptical about this 'bezel-touch' idea. That's where I hold the damn thing. I can't pick up my phone without changing the ring tone level now my iPod will scroll to a new track or shoot up in volume.
No thanks.
Errm. Cant you lock your keys on your moby then. Surely there would be a hold button like current iPods that will disable the bezel.

My wife and I were getting ready to leave for the airport, to fly to New York. A few weeks earlier, we'd gotten the news that her cancer had recurred, and we were going to see a specialist in New York. We didn't have the TV on, but my mother called and asked me if we knew what was going on. I said I didn't, and she simply said, "You'd better turn your TV on. You're not going to be flying to New York today."

Does anyone here have a high end camcorder with a built in 5.1 mic? If so does it really sound good? Being a new technology on camcorders under $1,200 Im curious if you really get a nice 5.1 sound. Obviously I'm not making Star Wars, nor awesome battle scenes with sound flying everywhere, but I like the idea if it really caught a jet going by or whatever sound would cross me. Love the idea cause I was with laser discs when AC-3 5.1 came out during my laser disc days and can't wait to see how it actually works once done editing without much sound tweaking as a test.
I dont really trust those who work on commission at Frys and Best Buy does not know my sound questions, just simple picture questions nor do they know how FCP works and other Mac questions. Why I come here to ask for honest answers.

People seem to keep forgetting:
E911 support on cellphones is handled via a built in GPS receiver. Usually users don't know its there, and cannot access it.
E911 on GSM phones is handled by triangulation at the towers. GPS is not a component common to most GSM phones and certainly not a part of the standard (E911 wouldn't work with older or imported phones if they relied upon GPS.)
I think GPS is, IIRC, built into IS-95 ("CDMA") in some form, as phones have to have some idea of where they are for the system to work (GSM is more "I can hear a tower, I'll talk to that. Ooops! It's complaining I'm too loud, I'll lower my power level", that kind of thing. Very laid back and easy going. Nice.)
This sounds like the iPhone.
E911 GPS: Check
GSM: Check
Music: Check
Camera: Check
Not huge news. The only thing it tells us is the limitation most providers put in place regarding what the GPS is available for is removed.
Well, not really. It looks more like a more general purpose mobile device than a phone. It might have phone functionality, but I doubt that'll be its primary purpose.

When my old MacBook died, I was going to replace it with the 11" MBA, but after realizing how limited the HD was and how much it would cost me to get decent storage capacity for my pictures and music I decided to get a 13" MBP.
Yes, I've used the "superdrive" just once since I bought this computer, but I have a healthy amount of storage capacity, an SD slot and heck, I can even play some TF2, L4D 2 and StarCraft 2 (on mid settings) on my free time, for the same price of a 11" MBA with a 128 GB SSD.
I'm in no way a power user, but I like to take my stuff with me at all times. With my games, music, photos and a couple of other programs I have installed I would definitely be short of space with a stock MBA.
Until a ~250 GB SSD from Apple gets a fair price, or the 128 GB becomes the standard drive at just $999, I don't plan on buying a MBA. I like it, a lot, but the base model needs to improve its specs a little bit.

Better they use the same gestures etc. as Apple if they are going to push forward with multi-touch. We don't want to end up in 10 years time with a situation where every device has a different method for doing the same thing!
I agree.
I don't care who is copying who when it comes to touch gestures. I just hope that Apple, Google, MS, etc all decide to use the same ones.

You can't beat the 0.75% returns they are getting on all the cash?
Either you trust the strategic vision of the company, or you do not. If you do not, you should not invest.
Paying dividends and crashing the share price of a fast growing growth stock is moronic. You do recognize there is a direct relationship between dividends paid and drop in share price?
If you want to beat the .75% return because you don't think the company has a good strategic plan, sell some of your position , the net effect is exactly the same. The bonus is that you are now less heavily invested in a company you do not believe in.

And that will check it even when it is not running in my dock?
Bless your soul :)
Yeah, just leave it open. Perhaps you are under the windows mentality that it is bad to leave apps open.
You can set it to chime as well when new mail arrives.

Like a bunch of the posters already, I was in the second period of the day in my High School. The headmaster came into my class and asked us to gather in the chapel with the rest of the school. I have to admit, my first reaction before I knew anything about the trajedy was, "Sweet, no more Latin today."
It was pretty scary actually since my school was about 100 yards from the National Cathedral in Washington DC and there was some concern among the administrators that it might be a target. I ended up walking the three miles home with my mom who had to walk the whole way home from her work since the city was basically shut down.
I remember in the weeks after that every plane I saw descending toward National Airport looked like it was coming in too fast and too low to be normal.

With my car system, volume 18 with my iPhone maxed is equivelent to around 30 with my Nano - at this volume I have the sound of gentle hissing when paused. Not cool.
I'd say Nano is loud enough for general headphone use, but if there is background noise it's not that loud. If I'm spending for something to house my entire music collection, it can't be second to my phone for music volume. That's just silly.

This is interesting - can anyone confirm that the website didn't do this before?
You really think that they would use a .org domain for a phone? If Apple follows through with a phone, I would be extremely surprised to see any domains used besides Apple.com or iTunes.com

Microsoft has announced that it has halted development on a universal version of VirtualPC.
In a statement on Monday, Microsoft said it "has made the decision not to move forward with a Universal version of Virtual PC at this time." -- via News.com (http://news.com.com/2100-1012_3-6102930.html?part=rss&tag=6102930&subj=news)
VirtualPC has long-been the king of the hill for Virtualization on Macintosh. With the Intel transition, however, came competitive pressure from Parallels (http://www.parallels.com/en/products/desktop/), which has since released the final version of its product, and VMWare which is showcasing a beta (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/08/20060805151513.shtml) of its solution at WWDC.
Microsoft has claimed that to port VirtualPC to Intel would be much like making VirtualPC 1.0 all over again.
Because of how closely virtualization software is tied to an operating system, Microsoft said that moving Virtual PC to the Intel-based Mac would be "similar to creating a version 1.0 release."

So the previous "beta" releases on the Mac were just alphas? Interesting. How long has Opera 8 been in the making? I am surprised that they're already releasing it, but maybe it just feels short.

10:15am EST, OS9 & IE 5.1 -- both left & right columns not displaying on the front page. their space is still there, but empty. there's just white space flanking the middle column.
also, is this the best way to alert the powers that be of these design issues? (and, more importantly) do the powers that be need/want to be alerted about this stuff?

Why on Earth would you expect Apple to ship iWork with it's machines for free? iWork is not MS Works - it's already far superior, and it's still a baby. In one or two more revisions, iWork will be a better overall suite of Apps than Office (which frankly, isn't saying much). It's unreasonable to expect Apple to give that away for free.
For the same reason the iLife suite is bundled with every Mac system -- to get people using them, and in the habit of buying the upgrades. I don't understand why Apple thinks this strategy works for iLife but not for iWork. Very short-sighted.

Instead of having an AT&T/Rogers/Fido/O2/Verizon/etc... subforum, why not have two separate subforums. One for GSM, one for CDMA.
Exactly. I bet lots of n00bs are going to ask about unlock.
