Yeah, except they forgot to include HD-DVD. :p

Microsoft is falling into Sony's little trap: they've got the advantage of making a profit because Sony's got a higher priced console, BUT Sony's also losing money for us consumers. Once everyone realizes that, and adds the prices up for the things the 360 is missing (such as wireless and HD-DVD), man does a PS3 seem like an incredible value. Not only that, the 1.6 update really kicks the PS3 up a notch in functionality. They've also got a greater variety of games coming out...We'll see how this turns out.

And really, I feel really sorry for the people that bought a 360 only a couple months ago...It's a shame that Microsoft has to be childish.

Smart ass:p Childish was probably the wrong word.

Also wouldn't Sony Computer Entertainment still be making a profit from PS2 console, software and accessory sales even though they loose money on every PS3?

Exactly how are people going to install Apple software like Aperture or Final Cut? Or re-install the OS?

For something like OS re-installs, maybe USB drives. For everything else, downloads, probably. That seems like a logical course of action. But then again, a lot of people don't like to use logic when they make decisions.

Now if we chop the HD to 4200 RPM and 40GB, remove Bluetooth, and use slower RAM, we could easily shave off another $50.

Laugh at this configuration all you like, but I'm much more likely to buy a $399 computer to use as a streaming media box on top of my TV than a $599 one.

It also works great for the average family. Us on MR tend to expect more from our computers. This $399 Mac mini configuration would be perfectly capable of holding large-sized iTunes and iPhoto libraries, maybe some light video editing here and there, making music with GarageBand, publishing a blog with iWeb, video conferencing, browsing the internet, etc.

And with the next revision, it could easily be improved upon.

You think a 40GB drive can hold OS X, iLife, a couple of additional apps, and large sized iTunes and iPhoto libraries? You must have forgotten to include the "just kidding" smilie.

Let's do some quick math. A small iPhoto library like mine is 2000 photos. I have a 5 megapixel camera, half the images have red eye removed or some other change (iPhoto keeps the originals and the edited copies) so I have roughly 3000 files averaging 1.8MB each or 5.4GB. That's a small iPhoto library. You also want to hold a large iTunes library which implies a 30 or 60GB iPod owner.

So without going any further we need about 10GB for OS X and all the bundled apps, another 10GB for a fairly small iPhoto library, 15GB to half fill an iPod and 25GB to hold two hours of footage from your digital video camera. For all practical purposes, remembering that hard drives don't run well without a bunch of free space for editing, virtual memory, etc., we've just filled an 80GB hard drive (formatted capacity 74GB).

So I've just proved that the Mac mini is fatally flawed for many users because it's physically too small to hold a standard 3.5" HD. If it had been even one inch bigger it could have not only held more, it would have been less expensive to manufacture.

I was surprised when they announced the edu iMac at only $899 and so the announcement that it's now restricted to institutional purchase makes sense. Regarding the specs I figure Apple must have gotten a really great deal on 80GB HDs because in the retail market there's only a $10-20 difference between 80GB and 160GB. Heck there's only a $35 difference between 80GB and 250GB.

alep85 said that 80% of the consumer market doesn't need anything more than integrated graphics. Obviously those people are over the age of 30 and don't have children.

There are "steam" achievements but I know those don't add to your xbox achievement points. I'm sure the experience is all the same, but I had to get it on PC/Mac even though I have an xbox. All my friends have gotten it on PC or PS3, either way we can play together via steamworks. Xbox guys are going to be lonely hehe

had both, decided to pay for the iphone instead of having work pay for the droid.

too much fragmentation and too many issues.

I had both too, and I didn't want to pay a fortune for my cell phone plan or my repairs.

I also didn't want to have to deal with an un-customizable home screen.

I know that I will go back to iOS when Apple really puts some work into an OS that hasn't changed much in 5 years.

Inspired by the latest rumour on the iPhone being marketed to businesses (http://www.macrumors.com/2007/04/23/atandt-to-target-iphone-to-business-customers/), I have the theory that iLife will be released with the iPhone and will display some great integration. That way it can also continue to be called iLife '07.. barely.

It appears the new Shuffle is not getting the new improved headphones. It was not specifically mentioned in the presentation today (unlike with the regular iPod and Nano), and pics at the Apple store show it with the older design. But the new headphones are sold separately for about $30. If they are indeed improved, seems like a must to me, but the extra expense pushes the price above $100. Very disappointing Apple's not replacing them across the entire line.

    So?

When you are looking at 3D with glasses, the image protrudes from the screen. In essence, when you are looking at 3D without glasses, the image should protrude from the screen. Since there's no protrusion, this qualifies as a misnomer.

I think that's false. I also think that the antenna issue is brought up every time Apple news hits the press in relation to iPhone stories, stock prices, etc.

One of the first things people sought to find out when the Verizon iPhone was released was whether or not it had an antenna issue.

    Damage done.

When the new iPhone is released - the issue will rear its ugly head again. If it's "solved" people will say that Apple fixed this "non issue". If it's not fixed, Consumer reports will once again not recommend the phone and there will be a slew of articles no doubt.

    So I disagree.

The damage was done and people still ask if Apple fixed their antenna problem.

What I can't wrap my head around is the sheer gullibility of not only the authors of this site, but so many of the frequent readers.

Do any of you possess short term memory? At all?

What has happened for the last 4 years in a row? With no lapse, no change, no variation whatsoever. iPhone is released in mid to late June. Once July.

...You'd have to be pretty deluded, and cracked out on the rumor mill, to think any other other iPhone 5 @ WWDC, release 2-3 weeks after.

What evidence has anyone seen to the contrary? Besides ****ing zero?

It's one thing to not believe a rumor - it's another to post something like this. Be prepared to be called out if you end up being wrong.

Now, if it's a history lesson you want, I'll be happy to oblige you. For the previous two versions, Apple has held an event before WWDC to preview the next version of iOS about 3 months before it was released. The new iPhone has always been launched with the new version of iOS in June(/July). That's three historical precedents:

    1) iOS is previewed 3 months in advance.
    2) The new iPhone is launched with the new OS.
    3) The iPhone is launched in June.

There's no such preview event this year. iOS 5 will be unveiled at WWDC - that's confirmed. Any way you look at it, history will be broken. Therefore, predicting what will happen this year based upon Apple's pattern has no more merit than any of the rumors.

Logically, it would make sense that iOS 5, being previewed at WWDC, is launched about three months later with the new iPhone in late August or early September. Historically, that jives with the timing of the preview/launch of iOS as well as the launches of iOS and the new iPhone coinciding. Obviously, that breaks from the pattern of releasing the new iPhone in June. That idea is supported, however, by multiple rumors of both a September iPhone launch and no hardware announcement at WWDC.

The rumors of a delayed iPhone launch, in turn, are supported by other rumors as to why it would be delayed: 4G, supply constraints out of Japan, or even related to a redesign or capacity bump.

Tiger added Widgets, which have surely been revolutionary...

I remember when WWDC last happened and Steve Jobs showing Spotlight was on TV!I think that's a poor example because Konfabulator was already around and Apple essentially just took that idea and made it part of the OS. Desk Accessories which were part of the original Mac, released in 1984, were similar to widgets. So I don't see where revolution comes to mind. They've evolved, but it's not a revolutionary idea.

I bought it today and have been playing around for a couple of hours (hence I am sweaty and stinky before I even get to the gym)....

Firstly it's bigger than I expected. It also looks good and far from cheap (playstation move & camera I'm looking at you)...

It works, and when it works - it works very well.

Dance Central is fantastic fun and a great aerobic workout on top.
Kinect Adventure is your usual mini game shenanigan.

I also bought Kinect Sports & Kinect JoyRide but have not played either as yet.

    Space is the biggest problem...

Damn this Kinect is one greedy mofo in regards to space. I could not use it in my own room due to lack of space, the same room where Move & Wii both have no issues what so ever. This is going to be its biggest problem by far.

Were talking 10-12 feet for best results. That's quite some distance from your TV and if you have to factor in a room having sofa's & chairs - it soon is evident your going to need a bigger home. Kids can forget this in their bedrooms anyway.

Once I was able to give it the room it demands it worked great, but as I say without that room - forget it.

    Menus

Dance Central's menu is great. Works with movement very well and feels sensitive and intuitive. Kinect Adventures menu system by comparison is clunky.

Right off to do some proper work for a change :D

Today I came down off the 11" high a little bit .... I still have access to the 11" in our office so I decided to work on it again today.

I started the day working on a small text only instruction manual for a product, then I took a few photo's with my camera, edited them and inserted the into the manual.

    Two things I noticed:
    1. The lack of vertical screen real estate, it felt cramped, compared to the 13" too much scrolling required.

    2. No SD slot ... Lucky I remembered where my SD/USB adapter was, that's an easy solution. Though it is an extra step and with the adapter it can't be plugged into either usb port if I want the power cord or ACD display plugged in, adapter is too wide, so I'd also have to carry a usb hub as well.

Half way through all this I switched over to my 13" Air and continued working. It was much better, the screen seemed huge after using the 11" for few hours straight.

For typing and editing long documents in word and/or doing light photo editing a few or more hours at a time in my experience yes the 13" is quite a bit better to work on. Actually I'd say it's a lot better.

With the 13" I found the screen is large enough so that you don't really think about it or feel cramped, even compared to the 15" I found the 13" was fine.

With the 11" today I was thinking man, I need to plug into an external monitor, or this kind of work needs a 15/17" screen ... I was doubtful the 13" would be that much better ... I was writing and scrolling though a lot of paragraphs at the time...

For fun I took the 13" and started working on it, to my pleasant surprise the difference was huge, for me it is the sweet spot.

So I'm sticking with my original plan to have the 13" as my main machine, it's a relief :) I could own both I can't justify that and I also think I have a better frame of mind when using one main machine, seem more organized.

I'm going to carry it everywhere too, just as if it was the 11" Air and why not the 13" isn't much larger than a legal pad of paper...

    That's my experience... so far.

Like Chevy, Nissan is a byword for ugly. But the Juke's ugliness doesn't make the Volt less ugly than it is, it just makes it less ugly than the Juke. But then I'm less ugly than the Juke, so what of it?
