Great app, especially since I have an EyeTV.

But while it works fine on my 64 GB iPod Touch, the performance of the app on my iPhone 3G is not good. The video takes a very long time to load (compared to the iPod Touch) and it only plays for a few seconds before it pauses to load more content (the Touch runs continuously). Not sure if this has to do with my Touch having a lot more free space available than the iPhone, or if the improved CPU in the Touch makes a difference.

And Apple isn't litigious? What a joke? Apple is one of the more litigious tech companies out there. You compare them to Google, or IBM, or heck, even Microsoft recently, and they make them look like the Mother Teresa of patent generosity. Apple are as bad as Oracle, in my books.

Apple will sue anything left right and centre. Remember their patents on things like "multi-touch", or "touchscreen phones".

Victor, you say that, but where is the evidence. Sure they have ridiculous patents, but you have to do that the way the patent system is setup in the US. However, where has Apple used its patents offensively against anybody, except HTC, in the recent past? Can you provide some links?

Google is really good about not suing people. But MSFT? They just sued Barnes And Noble! in the past week.

    http://www.thinq.co.uk/2011/3/22/microsoft-sues-barnes-noble-android-patents/

    And comparing to Oracle....hmm....

Seriously, you need to provide some evidence, for this litigious nature of Apple's.

Note: I am distinguishing between patent lawsuits and trademark infringement lawsuits. Trademarks can be lost if you don't actively defend them. Not the case for patents. So actually sending trademark infringement notices is a precondition to protecting them, which makes all companies (including Google) far more trigger happy with Trademark infringement based legal action.

If this applies to the Imac TBolt ports, then the two TBolt ports in fact share bandwidth from the single PCIe x4 connection. The combined max throughput of the two ports would be no better than that of a single TBolt port.

On their webpage, apple specifically says that the two ports are on separate busses and have double the throughput of a single bus. I guess whether you believe them or not is up to you...

Updated the day it came out and so far, everything is fine, except that I've had System Preferences crash a couple of times, which is odd, as System Preferences very rarely crashes. That may not even be related to the firmware update, though. Other than that, it's all good.

Where are those holy souls who claimed that Android was finished when iPhone launched on Verizon. I still see a 7% growth for Android compared to a negligible 0.02% for iPhone. According to a survey, the Thunderbolt is selling more than the iPhone at most of Verizon stores nationwide. :D

I don't think the Verizon iPhone release will affect Android much, but these numbers hardly justify gloating. They only contain 2-3 weeks of Verizon iPhone sales out of the 3 months they are reporting.

As a developer, I don’t care if it has a cellular radio or not... so iPad and iPod need to be counted too, unless you’re studying carriers alone.

PS, I’d rather have Apple “win” by having the best product and stable profits to fuel innovation, than “win” like Google by making an OS that is “basically OK” and giving it away for free in larger numbers.

If Apple were to decide to be like Google or Microsoft, it might be catastrophic or it might be profitable, but it will NOT give us better products. And if Apple products get worse, the copycat products will be too. Everybody loses!

    COULD YOU EXPLAIN IT PLEASE?

While it's an interesting concept and lot's of people might end up using it, I don't know if it would serve a great purpose for me. How about an OLED keyboard on the portables... that would be something cool.

well you might still get the same 34 min per frame with -smp 11. it might be worth a shot to see.

one of my systems actually does better at bigadv units with -smp 7 instead of -smp 8.

I thought you weren't doing bigadv right now;) I'll try it with 11 to see what happens.

There will be an iPhone 5 this year.
Last year iPhone 3GS sales dropped dramatically once the iPhone 4 'prototype' leak was out.
This year Apple is trying to squeeze as much as they can out of the iPhone 4.
I'm still holding out for the iPhone 5.

I noticed that Other World Computing has posted their free Macworld Exhibition Hall pass (http://eshop.macsales.com/Macworld/) and was wondering who was planning to go to the show this year. I've used OWC's free pass every year for the past three years and have never had any problems. It's a great way to check out all your favorite developers and vendors.

So who else will be there, and who's traveling the farthest?

EDIT: We've put together a plan so that we can all get a chance to meet each other during MacWorld. Every day of the expo, there'll be an informal meet-up of MacRumors members at 3:00pm in the "Horseshoe Lounge" area of the South Hall's street-level lobby. Photos and diagram here (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=3208175&postcount=64). No RSVP is required, and you're welcome to stop by just one day, or every day.

    The Big Meet-Up
We're designating the first day of the Expo, Tuesday, Jan. 9th, as the BIG MEET-UP. It seems like most people are planning to be there that day, so it's the best chance to meet other MacRumors members. If you can only make it to one, this should be it. 3:00 at the horseshoe lounge location (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=3208175&postcount=64).

Here's the list (so far) of MR members who have said they will be at Macworld:

    1. Flowbee
    2. vniow
    3. devilot (maybe)
    4. cuestakid
    5. CHROMEDOME
    6. screensaver400
    7. WildCowboy
    8. breal8406
    9. BigPrince
    10. andyh2
    11. mike3k
    12. brianbobcat
    13. Kodex
    14. solvs
    15. arn
    16. craigverse
    17. IJ Reilly
    18. slobeck
    19. Silencio

    Hope to see you there.

We're not idiots...of course the iPhone needs to figure out where I am when I ask Google to locate me on a map...or explicitly allow an app (like AroundMe) to identify restaurants within 15 miles of my location. But to constantly track me every single minute of the day is just wrong. Period. End of story.

Very likely this Federal lawsuit will pave the way for much clear disclosure by companies regarding tracking our physical movements.

I'll get slammed for this - but I don't care. Apple is playing a big part in the dumbing down of (some of) society by taking control/options away from users and keeping a walled garden. And I don't want/intend this to turn into a debate about walled/not; security; etc. My point is - that Apple and several other companies/educational institutions and even parents are increasingly participating in the dumbing down of America/other countries.

Apple doesn't want users to have to worry about x, y and z. That's GREAT. It really is. But at the same time - but taking users away from understanding the technology they are using - they are also contributing to the very thing they are (in Steve's latest speech) trying to avoid.

I'd love a car that is "maintenance free." Until the car actually needed some work done. If I have to rely on a 3rd party to do that maintenance and I can't do it myself - then it means those skills will never be learned or used (naturally.) I don't always see this as a positive.

I'm able to do a lot of electrical work and computer/video/etc repair work on my own because I was able to (when I was young) take things apart, learn how things worked inside and out.

    I'll stop rambling...

All 3D is a 2D image that is manipulated in such a way that the brain is tricked into seeing 3 dimensions. How is this any different exactly?

I'm not a fan of 3D movies (too gimicky) but they are different technologies with different results. With this app, cool as it is, you have to move in relation to the display to get any sort of depth. As far as I can tell, this would not work for any movies/games where the camera is moving. That, and there appears to be no "z axis" depth unless you're swinging your head back and forth.

As cheesy as it is in movies, at least you can sit still in your seat and have the paddleball fly into your face. This demo appears to be more like, "you can see the paddleball string if you tilt your head to the side".

It's funny, but wherever I go, I always see people with iPhones. My train, on plane trips between Chicago and NYC, during meetings, etc. I am amazed the number is only 5% - but I guess it's the circles that I am in.

That's because many of them are using the iPhone for purposes other than calls (emails, games, etc). Basic phones are in the pockets of their users when they're not on the phone.

Simple. They don't have Republicans. They actually give a **** about each other and come together to help each other. In the US- it's every man for himself. Just ask a Libertarian.

You know what companies do when they're having trouble in Japan? They all take a pay cut- even the CEOs. They work TOGETHER as a team. Amazing what that can do for a society.

I don't think it's a problem of political party because plenty of looting has happened under democrat governments as well. As for the rest of your post, can't really disagree there. Some cultures just seem to handle times of distress with more grace than others.

For the last time.... it's not coming out this year.

    iPad = spring

    iPod = fall

Once a year cycle. Stupid source.

I have Zinio and subscribe to multiple magazines on it. It works fine. I don't want a separate app for every magazine that I read. I don't want different controls, different features, different layout, etc. I don't want every magazine "enhanced" with video features in some brave new experiment that I'm funding. I want a PDF of the magazine delivered to me to read. That's what Zinio does (it's an encrypted equivalent to PDF). I want to go to one "virtual" bookshelf and pick the magazine I want to read. That's it.

Conde Nast is having to "slow down" because they've created a damned expensive delivery system instead of using a preexisting thing like Zinio, iBooks, B&N Reader, Kindle, etc. Imagine if every ebook series had its own app!

I had my ear done it a fit of teenage angst, but really have no desire to get anything else done.

Not that my opinion matters but I just do not find it appealing (spically with the sensor at the top...

I am curious how many they are going to sell with a refresh anwhere from 3 to 6 months away...

They're going to sell a crap load. Thinking otherwise is simply foolish.

    Space is the biggest problem...

Damn this Kinect is one greedy mofo in regards to space. I could not use it in my own room due to lack of space, the same room where Move & Wii both have no issues what so ever. This is going to be its biggest problem by far.

Were talking 10-12 feet for best results. That's quite some distance from your TV and if you have to factor in a room having sofa's & chairs - it soon is evident your going to need a bigger home. Kids can forget this in their bedrooms anyway.

Once I was able to give it the room it demands it worked great, but as I say without that room - forget it.

I thought you were just exaggerating, but after buying Kinect this weekend I found out it requires you to place the sensor:

    - within 2 to 6 feet of the floor
    - where the floor is visible to the sensor
    - in a position where there is 6 to 8 feet of "free" space for single player or 8 feet of "free" space for two players
    - centered below or on top of your TV (no angles, TV mount not included)
    - within clear sight (given)
    - well lit area with minimal ambient noise

Ridiculous. You would need at minimum a 42" HDTV and a radius of 8 feet around the Kinect sensor to play adequately.

I refuse to complicate my living room setup by putting the 360 in there. So, I guess I"ll just send the damn thing back as there is no possible furniture configuration in my game room to meet those requirements.

    Too bad.
